(DIVERSITY & INCLUSION)

As computers (DIGITALIZATION) became one critical component pervasive across all careers, computer science knowledge and skills are necessary and valued in virtually every job market.

We are TRANSFORMING Computer Science, Information Technology/Networking, and Database LEARNING EXPERIENCE by offering complete course curricula TO instruct OUR STUDENTS.

How do we deliver it to our students?

In 2018 Grover Cleveland High School partnered with Cisco Networking Academy to deliver a comprehensive, 21st-century learning experience to help our students develop the foundational Information Communication Technology (ICT) skills needed to design, build and protect networks.

In 2019 Grover Cleveland High School was selected as an Amazon Future Engineer (AFE) school – one of the few chosen schools in New York City! AFE is a partnership between Amazon and Project STEM to improve computer science education access in communities currently underrepresented in the technology field.

CAREER & FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

Provides information about career planning. Students will gain knowledge to assess their skills, values, needs and lifestyles enabling them to discover paths they may take in their future. Problem solving steps will be introduced to aid the process. The course's essential questions are:

  1. What skills and information should be considered for viable career planning?

  2. Assess individual skills, values, needs, personal attributes, and lifestyle choices.

  3. Self Assessment (students will Identify potential career pathways.

Student's Testimonials

Hello, my name is Jean. I am 16 years old, and I'm a junior at Grover Cleveland HS. 2020/21 school year was challenging for teachers and students, and I thought it would be uncertain to learn anything online. Since I like to be hands-on and experience things, that's how I genuinely know things. So I didn't expect anything interesting to happen this year until I got to the Principles of Design class taught by Mr. Wilk. To my surprise, it was a great class; even in online learning, you felt really in touch with what you were building, and the course is very interactive. I recommend this class. It is an excellent way to explore your creativity and build on your problem-solving skills as you face many challenges and make many mistakes because, at the end of that day, we are here to learn from those mistakes and get better. This class also has long-term benefits. For example, let's say you don't know what you want to do and what to study in college. Well, this class is a fun way of introducing you to a career as an architect. So if you don't know what you want to do, I recommend you give this class a try and hopefully you will like it as much as I did.

CISCO Networking Academy - CCNA Certification Classes

Be job ready today, tomorrow and beyond with Cisco Certifications.

Begin preparing for a networking career with this introduction to how networks operate, network architectures, models, protocols, and networking elements. Students will even get the chance to build simple local area networks (LANs) or perform basic configurations for routers and switches as we have the latest Cisco switches and routers available for students use in their classroom. Developing a working knowledge of IP addressing schemes and foundational network security was never more important and desirable than now. After completing CCNA courses, students are ready to take the CCNA Certification.

In these classes, students learn:

  1. Build LANs and WANs, perform basic configurations for routers and switches, and implement IPv4 and IPv6 addressing schemes.

  2. Configure routers, switches, and end devices to provide access to local and remote network resources and to enable end-to-end connectivity between remote devices.

  3. Basic mitigation of security threats, introduction to wireless networking concepts and terminology, and performance-based skills.

  4. Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills using real equipment and Cisco Packet Tracer (Virtual Configuration Tool).

Amazon Future Engineer - AP Computer Science Classes

Computer Systems & AP Computer Science

Amazon is committed to helping more students, have the resources and skills they need to build their best futures. Amazon is known for its long-term thinking style and we know that coding is the language of the future. Additionally, STEM education (or STEAM) and computer science are ingrained into the work many Amazon employees rely on day in and day out.

AP Computer Science Priciples course was designed not just to give students basic coding skills but also to introduce broader, multidisciplinary concepts, including ways to think about technology and how it will continue to impact society.

In these class, students learn:

  1. Computer Hardware, networking

  2. Principles of Computer Science

  3. Computer programs and computer coding.

  4. Skills that will allow students to thrive in a rapidly-changing world-including way of thinking, questioning, and working together.

  5. Computational thinking is an incredibly useful approach and skill set for students in every field, not just those with computers.

    • decomposition - breaking down a complex problem or system into smaller, more manageable parts

    • pattern recognition – looking for similarities among and within problems

    • abstraction – focusing on the important information only, ignoring irrelevant detail

    • algorithms - developing a step-by-step solution to the problem, or the rules to follow to solve the problem

  6. Visual Thinking allows students to see the relationship between the program they write, create, and the stunning visual results they produce.

SQL - Honor Database Class

Honors Database class is more rigorous and is designed for students who want to learn the fundamentals of interacting with relational database management systems, including issuing queries that return results sets and modify data. This unique introductory SQL class provides easy-to-understand SQL instructions and at the same time it equips students with the SQL skill that is one of the most important skills for any programmer, irrespective of technology, framework, and domain as applications use databases to process pieces of information.

In this class, students learn:

  • MySQL Database

  • Querying Data with MySQL.

  • Developing SQL Databases.

  • Analyzing Data with MySQL Reporting Services.

  • Manipulating SQL tables and databases.

AutoCAD - Principles of Design Class

AutoCAD is a computer-aided software program developed by Autodesk that enables engineers, architects and even artists to create two dimensional and three-dimensional models of solid surfaces.

In this class, students learn:

  1. Core topics required for preparing professional drawings using AutoCAD software.

  2. Engineering, construction, and architecture industries.

  3. Innovative ideas and creative imagination.

  4. Prepare students for Autodesk Certified Associate certification

Furthermore, we are committed to empowering students with a free Education version of AutoCAD, so students can explore emerging technologies and access rich learning content to position themselves for career success.
